Las Casitas, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote - November 1982 to November 2002
My father first visited Lanzarote in 1970 and I first visited Playa
Blanca in March 1983 by which time my father had already bought some
weeks at Las Casitas. We were there on an inspection visit which cost
us the princely sum of £100 including accommodation and flights
for one week.
There were no tarmac roads in Playa Blanca at that time, no street
lights and a torch light was an essential part of your equipment if
you went out at night. There were only three restaurants all of which
closed at 8.p.m unless you managed to persuade them to stay open until
9p.m.
The amazing thing was that my father was 70 at that time and it is
difficult to imagine that he was only just beginning to purchase time
share at his age. He had been looking to buy some property for several
years all over Europe and the Canaries and nothing had seemed quite
right until he saw the advertisement for the Wimpey development in
Play Blanca. Indeed some of the sites in Lanzarote he was shown as
possible development sites are still empty.
The attraction of Las Casitas was it’s location and the fact
it was backed by an English Company (Wimpey). The complex was very
small, all units were on ground level and the atmosphere was fantastic.
Although Playa Blanca has grown considerably and there has been a
lot of development the Las Casitas Resort itself has changed very
little and the view from the patio on the bar area looking out over
the pool is little different to that of 20 years ago. It still retains
it’s unique atmosphere even though many improvements have been
made. Despite the fact that there is a comprehensive ongoing improvement
programme on the resort part of it’s charm is that it still
bears the hallmarks of a 20 year old time share development. This
is only to be expected but is more than compensated for by it’s
unique atmosphere. The gardens are well maintained and with the bungalows
being well spaced out the whole site appears very spacious and open,
unlike some more recent developments.
We have virtually retained the same management company since the start,
first with Wimpey and then with WimPen, and this has been instrumental
in its successful management. The ongoing management and maintenance
of the resort has been good and maintenance fees have been kept to
realistic levels unlike some of the more recent timeshare developments.
Over the years I have seen a few changes as regards owners, visitors
and staff on the resort we have had several resort managers but some
of the original staff are still there, and the welcome you receive
whenever you visit the resort is unsurpassed.
I have two brothers who both own on the Resort and as a family we
have owned as many as 17 weeks there with up to four generations of
our family making visits. I myself have visited the Resort at least
once a year since 1983 with the exception of 2001, and some years
I have been there in February/March, October/November and December/January.
In fact my total length of occupancy on the resort over 20 years works
out at almost 3 weeks per year. We have had many happy times there,
probably culminating in October 2002 when we took four children out
there together with their spouses and grandchildren making a total
of 19 altogether. This contingent, coupled with many longstanding
friends who have been frequenting Las Casitas for many years resulted
in a great party at the prince William Bar which is now run by Ronnie
and Maureen.
There is no doubt in my mind that, despite being the first time share
resort in the Canaries and therefore being a bit of an experiment,
Las Casitas has stood the test of time well and has a lot going for
it which other larger and more modern resorts may not. As long as
it continues to be managed as well as it has and the owners continue
to look to the future there is no reason why it should not continue.

20 YEARS AS AN OWNER AT LAS CASITAS
As one of the first owners 20 years ago I have never had any regrets
of buying a Wimpey Timeshare villa at Las Casitas, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
Apart from many excellent RCI exchanges made since my early retirement,
my wife and I never tire of returning to Las Casitas and always enjoy
a relaxing holiday there.
Las Casitas is superbly situated very close to all the facilities
of the still unspoilt village of Play Blanca with many restaurants,
bars and shops and its lovely beach and others nearby.
Las Casitas still retains the original Spanish style villas, furnishing
and décor. Being a small complex, 48 villas, it never becomes
overcrowded. There is an excellent swimming pool, bar and tennis court.
Las Casitas has always been well maintained by the management company,
which is now WimPen Leisure, and you are always made most welcome
by the management and staff on site.
Congratulations to Las Casitas on its 20th Anniversary.

Big Ken Ferrie pops up in the Canary Golf Open – and wins.
The Canary open golf championship held at Adeje in the southern part
of Tenerife brought out some now notable players, who had perhaps
been somewhat hidden in anonymity recently. Kenneth Ferrie, a large,
genial young man of 24 years won with 22 strokes under par, ending
with a sensational birdie that left some of his equally anonymous
fellow-players with a slack jaw.
Ferrie is not far short of 1 metre 94 centimetres tall, and weighs
in at 114 kilos. He left the Spanish players Jose Maria Olazabal,
Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez standing.
Oddly enough it was another Spaniard, the seventeen year old Pablo
Martin, who surprised everyone by becoming the leader during the second
day of the tournament. Not only is he seventeen, he is also amateur,
but this was an open championship, in which the pros mix it with the
weekenders.
It was slightly embarrassing to note that the last ten players out
of the twenty-eight competitors were all Spanish. The first eight
were Ferrie (England), Lawrie (Ireland), Hedblom (Sweden), Mads Vibe-Hastrup
(Denmark), Brian Davis (England), Gary Evans (England), Charl Schwartzel
(USA), and Paul Cassey (England).

Las Casitas , Lanzarote - Celebrating 20 Years.
Developed by a division of George Wimpey PLC, Las Casitas
was the first resort registered with RCI in 1982.
Wimpey researched locations around the world before Playa Blanca
was chosen for its first Time-Ownership development.
Why Lanzarote? – Less than 4 hours flying time from Britain,
the island lies just sixty miles from the West Coast of Africa on
the same latitude as Florida. Rainfall is minimal. Throughout the
year the temperature rarely drops below 60 degrees or rises above
95 degrees.
Lanzarote is quiet small, approximately 36 miles long by 12 miles
wide. It is a place of contrasts – from the palm trees and
grape vines of the north to the moonscape of the interior and the
golden beaches and quiet bays of the south.
Las Casitas consists of 48 Villa bungalows set amongst sub-tropical
gardens, the centerpiece is a large heated swimming pool with surrounding
terrace for sunbathing. Other facilities for the exclusive use of
Las Casitas owners include a children’s pool, full size tennis
court, poolside bar and a snack area.
The Owners take a great interest in the resort many of which have
owned since day one in 1982.
The original furniture which is in a solid wooden Castilian style
is still very serviceable and many of the owners do not wish to
change from that design so it is not an easy task. However due to
new fire protection requirements the resort is currently undergoing
a partial refurbishment scheme with all the soft furnishings in
the bedrooms being renewed to fall in line with legislation. A full
refurbishment programme is being phased over the next 3 years.
The Management Company WimPen Leisure Management has completed two
Pilot scheme villas and during the year the Owners views will be
sought to identify which is the most suitable.
